When comparing quotes for a solar system, there are several key factors to consider to ensure you're getting the best value for your investment. Here's a breakdown of what to look at:

1. System Size & Energy Needs

• Kilowatt (kW) Rating: The system’s size, typically expressed in kilowatts, determines how much energy it can generate. You’ll want a system that offsets your consumption needs.

2. Solar Panels (Modules)

• Brand and Efficiency: High-quality panels tend to have higher efficiency, meaning they produce more energy for the same amount of sunlight.  

• Manufacturer’s Warranty: This warranty covers manufacturing defects.

• Performance Warranty: Sometimes called Linear Power Output warranty, guarantee that the panels will perform at a certain percentage of their original output (e.g., 80% or higher).

3. Inverters

• Type: There are string inverters, microinverters, and string inverters with power optimizers, each with pros and cons. Microinverters and optimizers are best against shading (trees, chimneys, vents, etc.) and lower irradiance faces.  

• Brand and Type: Reputable brands and high-quality inverters last longer and are more efficient.  

• Warranty: Covering manufacturing defects.

• Service and Maintenance: Ask about the company's ability to support you in case of issues after installation.

• Customer Support: It's an advantage if the installer is local, as they will understand regional factors like climate and the best way to orient your panels. Ensure the company offers strong customer support post-installation in case issues arise.

• Lead Time: How long will it take for the system to be installed once you’ve signed a contract? This is highly dependent on how long it takes to secure financing and permits but shouldn't be longer than three months.

6. System Design and Monitoring

• Customization: Is the system designed for your specific home and energy needs?  

• Monitoring and Apps: Look for systems that include monitoring software or apps so you can track energy production and consumption in real-time.
